The Weight of a Soul

Elizabeth Tammi’s second book, The Weight of a Soul, offers a dark and fascinating take on Norse mythology. Beautifully written, being wistful and dream-like in her execution, Tammi has created an enjoyable Viking-era read, full of descriptive suspense and foreboding. It really does deserve all the praise.

Set in Midgard, we are immediately introduced to Lena and Fressa Freding, daughters of their clan Chief, Fredrik. Together, they are a strong and determined unit, sisters devoted to one another. One is set to eventually lead their clan, the other is a warrior recently engaged.

In the opening pages, the family dynamic is apparent – an often-absent father, an engagement disapproved of, and a sister (Fressa) unnaturally skilled. Life seems challenging for them but both appear hopeful for the future. Yet, when Chief Fredrik makes an abrupt return, gifting Fressa a blade, this sets off a series of events that ends with one sister murdered and the other fighting to bring her home.

Driven by desperation and grief leads Lena to call upon Hela, the goddess of death, and together they strike a bargain – this being a soul for a soul. However, it is not that simple. It must be one weighty and equal to Fressa’s – a fighter who is as brave and gifted as she. But in what appears to be a game between Norse gods, can Lena really succeed. Is she capable of murder?

Full of bold acts of betrayal and heartbreak, The Weight of a Soul shows readers the consequences of meddling with death, and the devastation one girl is willing to cause in order to see her sister once more. No doubt, lovers of mythology and fantasy will be pulled in by what I have deemed the Soul Effect: Tammi’s vivid world-building skills and the blurring of innocence and corruption.

Interestingly, Tammi says that this story has been an ‘immense privilege and responsibility’ due to her own heritage. As most of her family is Scandinavian, she felt very fortunate to have learned about the history and mythology behind where her family originated.

The release date for The Weight of a Soul is 3rd December 2019.
